Elämäni musiikki/Music of my life: Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode. Heidät olen nähnyt livenä kaksi kertaa, ja se ei riitä. Käsien heilutus Never Let Me Down Againin tahtiin on jotain voittamatonta, vaikka kädet puutuvat tunnottomiksi.

Myös Depeche Mode, kuten Duran Duran, on liittynyt elämääni isona osana sekä lapsena, teininä että aikuisena. Lapsuudesta muistan parhaiten ja elävimmin Enjoy the Silencen musiikkivideo. Samaistuin jotenkin Dave Gahanin 'esittämään' kuningashahmoon, joka yksinään raahaa penkkiä jonnekkin kukkulan päälle. Olin kovin koulukiusattu ala-asteella, joten tämä erilainen ja 'kuulumaton' hahmo sai minut samaistumaan siihen erilaisuuteen ja välittyvään yksinäisyyteen.

Teininä (ja aikuisena) myös Depeche Mode liittyi voimakkaasti epätoivoisiin ihastuksiin ja masennuksen tuntemuksiin. 90-luvun alussa ilmestynyt "Songs of Faith and Devotion"-levy puhui suoraan sielulleni. Levy oli tarpeeksi melankolinen, mollisointuinen ja etenkin Walking in My Shoes toi lohtua teinimasennukseeni. Nykyään kyseinen levy toimii yhtenä soundtrackinä päässäni kun ajattelen zombie-kirjaa, jonka aion muka joskus kirjoittaa. Hah hah.

Aikuisena on siis Depeche Modesta sekä soundtrack Zombie Apocalypseen että loppuillan fiilistelyyn, koska mikään ei oikeastaan ole parempaa kuin fiilistellä Depeche Modea keskellä yötä. Niin moni kappale herättää niin suuria tunteita, että sydän meinaa pakahtua. Tätä kirjoittaessani kuvittelen kesäisen auringonnousun, jonka otan vastaan Depeche Modea kuunnellessa. Sitä aikaa jälleen odotellessa.

Depeche Mode. I've have seen them live twice, it's not enough. The feeling of waving your arms until they're numb to Never Let Me Down Again is unbeatable.

Depeche Mode, as Duran Duran, has played a big factor in my life during my childhood, teens and an adult. From my childhood the one song/music video that tops everything is Enjoy the Silence. I identified with Dave Gahans lonely chair-dragging king, who seemed different and a loner. I was bullied all through elementary school (pretty much through all school), so this different character and the loneliness that it displays was very identifiable for me.

As a teen (and an adult) Depeche Mode as well was connected to unrequited love and feelings of depression. The album Songs of Faith and Devotion that came out in the early 90's spoke directly to my souls. The album is melancholic enough, in the manor key and especially Walking in My Shoes brought solace to my teen depression. Nowadays the album is a soundtrack to the imaginary zombie-book I intend to write. Ha ha! :D

As an adult Depeche Mode besides being my Zombie-soundtrack as well as "feeling the music" in the late hours of the night, pretty much nothing is as good as listening to Depeche Mode on high volume late at night/early in the morning. So many of their songs evokes strong feelings, so that it feels like my heart is bursting. While I'm writing this, I'm imaging a summer sunrise and welcoming it to Depeche Mode. Here I am,  waiting....

Olen paljon peilannut elämääni musiikin kautta. Musiikkikappaleet puhuttelevat minua joko lyriikkojen  kautta tai sitten niin että jokin kappale liittyy johonkin tilanteeseen niin voimakkaasti, että se jättää muistijäljen.

Ensimmäinen lempibändini oli Duran Duran. Muistan taaperona kuulleeni ainakin Girls on Filmin joltain televisiokanavalta,  ja se oli rakkautta heti. Musiikkivideot olivat niin jänniä ja tapahtumarikkaita, että ne viehättivät yhdistettynä musiikkiin, Toki meni vuosia ennen kuin oikeasti tajusin musiikista yhtään mitään. Rakkaus Duran Duraniin on jatkunut tähän päivään, lähes koko elämäni siis. On aikoja, jolloin bändi on ollut taka-alalla, mutta teininä ja nuorena aikuisena bändillä oli hyvin suuri merkitys elämässäni. Duran Duran oli ensirakkauteni ja John Taylor oli ensi-ihastukseni, tämä edelleen miellyttää silmääni :D .

Kahdeksannella luokalla löysin paikallisesta divarista Duran Duranin kasetteja joita minulla ei ollut. Löysin useita fantastisia  kappaleita, joita en ollut aiemmin kuullut. Melko lailla koko kahdeksatta ja yhdeksättä luokkaa väritti punk ja Duran Duran. Muistan tuon aikaisen mustan muistikirjani, joka oli täynnä (vääärin) kuulemiani lyriikoita, se saattaa jopa olla vielä tallessa.

Muistoissani lapsen Duran Duran yhdistyy siis ensi-ihastumiseen ja jänniin musiikkivideoihin.
Teinin Duran Duran yhdistyy epätoivoisiin ihastumisiin ja masennuksen tuntemuksiin.
Aikuisen Duran Duran yhdistyy kauhistuttavaan itsenäistymiseen, mutta myös onnen hetkiin, kuten bändin näkemiseen livenä. Lukemattomia karaoke-esityksiä unohtamatta.

All my life, I've mirrored my life through music. Songs speak to me through lyrics or through the memory of listening to/hearing a certain song at a certain moment, that it has affected me so strongly that it leaves a trace in my memory.

My first favorite band was Duran Duran. I remember hearing at least Girls on Film on some tv-station and it was love at first listen. Music videos were exciting and full of action, that they added to the love combined with the music. Obviously it took years before I actually understood anything about music. My love for Duran Duran has lasted until this day, so basically all of my life. There are times when it has been on the back burner, but as a teen and a young adult the role of band was very significant in my life. Duran Duran was my first love and John Taylor was my first crush, he's still eye candy to me :D .

In eight grade I found a few Duran Duran cassettes, which I didn't have, at the local thrift shop. I found fantastic new songs I hadn't heard before. Pretty much the whole of eight and ninth grade I was into punk and Duran Duran. I remember I had a black notebook at the time and it was filled with the lyrics (most of which I had heard wrong).  I even might have it, still.

In my memories, Duran Duran of a child connects to first crushes and exciting music videos.
The teenagers Duran Duran connects to unrequited love and feelings of depression.
The Duran Duran of an adult connects to the terrifying reality of moving on ones own, but also to happy moments such as seeing the band live. And let's not forget the countless karaoke songs I've sung :D .



The first song/video I heard and saw (that I remember). This marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
