Myrkylliset ystävät

(the text has been previously published in English)

Pscyhology Todayssa luki: "Rehellisyys on tärkeää jokaisessa suhteessa. Mutta mitä on tapahtunut ystävällisyydelle? Miksi brutaali totuus on jotain tavoittelemisen arvoista?".

Empatian puute on yhteydessä kiusaamiseen.
Vapaamatkustaminen

  • Toksiset ystävät voivat käyttää hyväkseen kiltteyttäsi ja anteliaisuuttasi, mutta eivät itse anna mitään vastineeksi, ikinä. Tätä tapahtuu esim. syömällä toisten ruoat, juomalla juomat tai jättämättä lainatut tavarat palauttamatta. Hyväksikäytön tavat ovat lukemattomat. Toksiset ystävät harvoin jakavat omistaan, mutta jos he jakavat tapahtuu se pitkin hampain ja muistuttaen lukemattomia kertoja, kuinka he jakoivat sitä, tätä ja toista kanssasi. He unohtavat, että olet jakanut omistasi heille useamman kerran (omasta tahdostasi tai muiden vaatimuksesta). Omalla kohdalla olen huomannut tämän alkoholin kohdalla.

Olenme kaikkia 'viallisia ihmisiä', myönsimme me viallisuutemme tai emme.

The toxicity of friends.

(Pituuden vuoksi poikkeuksellisesti englanniksi, laita kommenttia, jos kaipaat käännöstä!)
I recently wrote about friends being a family you can choose. But what to do when a friendship turns sour and the friendship doesn't 'benefit' you, but makes you feel bad instead? What if your family makes you feel bad about yourself as well? If you’ve grown up in a toxic family, toxic may feel normal to you. Distancing yourself yourself from longtime friends can be as complicated and painful as distancing yourself from family members even though friends are chosen and family is not.

You can find numerous articles online (and some academic research) about how you should dump toxic friends and family. Obviously it's easier said than done. Cutting people out of your life, whether friends or family, is never easy. The articles I read for the purpose of this post list numerous warning signs and signs that can indicate your friend or family member is in fact toxic. (I will return to toxic family in another post.)

Criticism, discrediting, negativity
  • You don’t do things right, you’re given advice and criticism that makes you feel small and embarrassed. We all have our strong points, but we all venture into “other areas” where we’re good enough. For example cooking, drawing, playing around with makeup, writing etc… most of us do things differently, but why should a friend criticize? What’s wrong with different kind of cooking? What’s the point in critiquing others ability to draw, write or do makeup? What do you gain by criticizing others in their different levels of skills other than making your friend feel bad about themselves? A quote from Psychology Today: “Honesty is important in any relationship. But what happened to kindness? What’s this idea about brutal truth being something to aspire to?”
  • Some friends lack faith in you and belittle your achievements. You may be proud of how far you’ve come from something (or for example in my case going to work full-time, studying at the uni and trying to maintain some social life and my blog at the same time) in the work field or whatever it maybe you feel you’ve achieved in your life. Instead of supporting you or being proud of you, they belittle you or aren’t interested in your success.
  • Some toxic friends never have anything nice to say. Your ideas and achievements or attempts just bring up a negative opinion from them. Unnecessary Debbie Downer
Jealousy & discontent
  • Belittling and being unsupportive may be due to jealousy. When you succeed in work, relationships, or in other aspects in life, they might feel bitter because they lack the same success in one or more areas, so they don’t feel happy for you, they don’t support you. They might even judge you (and belittle you and be unsupportive).
  • Others are always dissatisfied, complaining, discontent and wallow in eternal misery. They can bring you down when you’re happy about your success and at least commiserate how they’re not successful and how they don’t have the things you have. But yet we come to lack of support, making things about themselves and not being happy for you.
Lack of empathy
  •  They don’t feel your pain. Or they don’t understand, can’t relate or are not interested in your pain. No matter what the reason for said pain is: death, depression, relationship trouble or just a feeling of the world bringing you down, at worst just tell you to “get over it!” and make you feel bad for being in pain, whichever kind it is. Bullying is related to lack of empathy. For example if you talk about your pain, your emotions are used to attack you and it can damage you psychologically. Your pain and sadness are not comparable to others pain and sadness and no one should make you feel bad about that.
Freeloading
  • Toxic friends can take advantage of your generosity and giving nothing in return. Whether eating all your groceries, drinking all your booze, or borrowing and never returning your clothes. The ways to take advantage are numerous. They rarely share their own stuff with you and if they do, they do it grudgingly and remind you on numerous occasion how they did share this that and the other with you. They forget the things you’ve shared with them (willingly or unwillingly). I’m thought to be a bit of a boozer, which I might be, BUT more often than not a load of my drinks go down other peoples mouths.

According to Psychology Today:
“Great friendships extend life. A 10-year-long Australian study showed that participants with solid friend groups were 22% more likely to live longer. Unfortunately, a bad friend can have the opposite effect, yielding increased vulnerability to all the stress-related body signs—higher blood pressure, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), lowered immunity, higher blood sugar, depression, anxiety; the list goes on. But how do you know if you’re in a friendship that’s affecting your health and killing your spirit?”
We’re all faulty people, whether we admit to our faults or not we should grow with our friends and understand that life is about said growth and challenges. We may grow and be challenged at different times, but because you can choose your friends, your good friends should support you, even if they don’t agree on everything you do. Friendship is about compassion, support, laughter and respect.

I'm definitely not claiming that I'm perfect or that I'm not toxic in the least. Probably most of us carry some traits of a toxic friend and it depends on others (and ourselves) how we and our traits are perceived. But one thing I cannot understand, friends who don't support each other. Questions for toxic people: Why are others success, happiness, endeavours so hard to to accept and why is it so hard to be happy for others? What is supporting your friend taking away from you? What they're doing and what they're aspiring to, might not be in your area of interest, but why is it so hard to support them? Are we all just selfish, or has the current era made us all blunt and selfish?

Also, I'm not saying you should dump all you friends, even if they're showing a bit of toxicity. But sometimes distance and a break does wonders. And sometimes cutting the ties is the only way to go, and there are times when the toxic friends cuts the ties for you.

Why do we envy?

(This post is exceptionally just in English)

I ran into this article a while a go in the Psychology Today website: 7 reasons why we envy our friends and vice versa. As the article states everyone feels envy, it's a basic human trait: we want what we think someone else has. Some researchers say that we feel a lack in comparison to someone else.
"When envy is activated within a frienship, the friendship can experience significant tension and conflict. Friendship is built on notions of trust and mutual support, so competition - the bare essence of envy - seriously gnaws at the foundation of friendship. It's awfully difficult to relax and trust a friend if that friend doesn't wish the best for you."

I've been wondering about this for years, envy. I am the first to admit that there are things I envy from others. More money, freedom, looks, success etc... But I'd like to think that despite envying some of these things I think my friends have, I can still be a supportive friend and that it's not their fault why I envy them.

The article lists seven reasons and they're listed below. Under the title, I'll give my take on about what/why we envy and why we shouldn't.

1. Money
- money is a big cause of envy, especially if it's talked about a lot and the division between the "poor" and the "rich" is brought to attention a lot in a group. I'm prone to envy money, because I'm such a shopaholic a Euro Jackpot wouldn't be enough for me...

2. Relationship status
- There are always those who complain "at least you have someone", "if you can find someone, why can't I?", "I'm not good enough for anybody". I do understand that for a lot of people, having a relationship is important, but how does envying someone elses relationship status helps you establish your own? Bitching and whining about it doesn't help anyone. Even though it's scary, if you want a relationship -put yourself out there, someone will like you just as you are. No need to settle. And to those in relationships, don't dump your friends when you find that special someone, because sometimes boy-/girlfriends come and go, but good friendships are forever!

3. Fertility and children
- I've heard that some people want children... (why, that I don't understand 😉) and especially infertility can strain friendships. When you try and try and try and others around you are breeding like bunnies. Again, it's easy to become resentful and be full of envy, though your fertility or lack of it isn't anyones fault. Not an easy situation.

4. Physical attractiveness
- Probably everyone has envied someone because of their looks. But still "normal looking" or even "ugly" (whoever made these attributes...) people get attention and are found attractive by people. And then there are these "gorgeous" people, and not every single person in the world fancies them. Looks are such a small part of a persons life, there's no reason to envy someone elses looks, it's how we click on other levels that counts. People are attracted to different things in others and we can't look like the person we'd most like to look like. It's just a fact. Instead of envying our "prettier" friends we should work on our own self-esteems and basically talk ourselves up in front of the mirror everyday.

5. Weight
- Very much related to the above. I do envy my slimmer friends, I wish I was slim. But the only person who can do something about it, is me. My slim friends aren't at fault and I don't want them to balloon up. But what I do hate is the backhanded comments like "You look good despite your size", people could lose the latter part of that sentence. Also comments like, "you have such pretty face" etc... do feel annoying. My weight shouldn't affect your life in anyway just like your weight shouldn't affect mine.

6. Professional success (especially in the same career)
- This is a tricky one to crack down. For me personally I do get envious of those who are given a permanent position, even though I've been hanging on here for 7 years. Again, it's not my colleagues fault, the problems are higher up. I am happy for my colleagues who get a permanent position as it's not a given.
- I'm also proud of my friend running her own business, having followed it close by, it's not easy. It takes guts to start a company. You can never really know how it's going to go but as a friend I can be there for her and offer assistance in little things like sharing their information, suggest the company to my friends, sharing and liking their posts on social media. Their success does not affect me and my potential success in something someday. I don't even care about "healthy competition" and don't see the point of it, at least on the fields I'm acquainted in. Friends should support friends, even a little thing can seem big to your friend.

7. Social media
- Social media, ah..... The place of envy and more envy. It's easy to lull yourself into thinking that the pictures, status updates all the happy-go-lucky posts paint the picture of a perfect life of other people. It's known that people like to show the best of their life on social media for others. And why wouldn't they? Who wants to give a depressed look about their life? Even if they're depressed.
- There are many ways to show or feel envy on facebook for example. You put a picture up, that you think is nice and beautiful etc.. you hardly get any likes. Someone puts a picture of a salad up, and get a few dozen likes. It's easy to feel unliked and you envy the salad. And then there is the other way, you see a pretty picture of someone or something, you envy the person in the photo or who took the photo and decide not to like the picture because of it.

I'd also like to add my own one:
8. Skills
- It seems many of us envy the skills others have that we lack. Others talents lie in sewing, knitting, cooking, baking. Others are artsy and creative, they can draw or make music. Would I love to be skilful in these things? YES! But am I interested in developing them? Not really. Why would I need to bake, when my friend makes the best red velvet cake and tiramisu cake in the world? She can bake them for me, I assume. If I want fancy food I hope my dad or aunt or friend will cook for me!m  I'd love to draw or doodle, but I don't have the patience to practise it.Same goes for knitting, I royally failed these handy skills at school and haven't had the interest in them thereafter.
- Well what about my own skills then? I'm the artsy type, my field is writing and photography. I especially get inspired by lyrics and photos and modify the photos with a lyric. I still need to practice the art of photography.
- But why do we envy these things? So what if someone is better at something that you are good too?
What does it matter? What does saying "I would've done this better" accomplish? Does it boost your ego? Like I said earlier, friends should support each other, not scrutinise and criticise.

Am I making any sense? What are your thoughts about envy in friendships? Please comment below and lets have a bit of a discussion!

Ystävät on perhe? Friends as family?

(in English below)

Eilisen ystävänpäivän kunniaksi on hyvä miettiä mitä ystävät merkitsevät.

Kompromissi on kuitenkin aina löytynyt, eikä peleistä jää ikuista pahaa mieltä.

Sulassa sovussa Rodoksella/Sweet harmony in Rhodos

My souls sister 💖
Love and marriage!

Way back when.

To honor yesterdays, it's good to reflect on what friends mean to you. Valentines Days is actually "Friends day" in Finland. There are friends and there are "friends". It's not easy to make distinctions between the two, but there are friends who are above everyone else. They are the ones, I've chosen as my family. They say blood is thicker than water, but I don't believe it to be true. Those who know me well, know that I have a troublesome relationship with my biological family, but let's not focus on that. You can choose your friends and the toxic "friends" and acquaintances are easier to cut out of your life than your biological family members.

I think that maybe people aren't meant to have just one soulmate, one partner in life. Instead we have many soulmates with whom we create our own family. I'm lucky to have found mine and our family is over 10 years old by now.

As with bio families, in your chosen family there are also the occasional conflicts and tantrums, but I would say that whole lot of less than in your bio family. I think about my chosen family and the conflicts we've had are mostly about travel arrangements, food policy and games. Games bring the claws and the teeth out. But we've always managed to compromise and even the games haven't left anyone permanently scarred.

My family is helpful, supportive, a little bit of teasing but most of all we all accept each other just as we are. Even though we try to each pay our part on trips etc... we don't have to countdown every single cent and figure out who owes and how much to whom. We don't demand or give ultimatums. Our friendship is unconditional, it's not based on compensation or benefits and we don't hold grudges.
I couldn't ask for a better family. One is my soul sister, one is my soul brother and one I ended up marrying.

As well as this chosen core family, I also have another soul sister with whom we've fought and made up, fought and made up. She's put up with me for more years than I dare to count and there's no doubt in my mind that we'll be together for the rest of our lives. We've experienced amazing things and made memories that I wouldn't give top for anything! No matter where life takes us, we're always there to grab each others asses!
