Itsekäs sairaanhoitaja / The selfish nurse.

(This post is exceptionally written in Finnish first.)

Joissain maissa, muun muassa Suomessa, hoitajien ajatellaan olevan sisar hento valkoisia, joilla on Florence Nightingale-syndrooma.

Toisissa paikoissa hoitotyö on enimmäkseen henkisesti raskasta.

Palkat on saatava kuntoon.

In some countries, Finland among others, nurses are thought of as people who have a Florence Nightingale -syndrome, and are thought to be automatically nurturing and doing it out of the goodness of their heart. Nurses are thought to be humble, basically destitute, because "the calling" is supposed to fulfill their lives and the little pay they get should be more than enough.

The media often claims that nurses make at least €3000 a month. But they always forget to mention that this kind of salary includes additional money you get from experience and personal bonuses. And of course shift work compensation. The nurses who work mon-fri 9-5 make less money and even with bonuses they are barely left with €2000 for the month. Even though those working dayshifts might as well save lives, for example by helping a suicidal patient at an outpatient clinic.

But now, that the collective bargaining (?) is in process and we don't actually have a deal in place at all. Nurses aren't allowed to do overtime or switch shifts if the employer asks them to. Suddenly we're selfish. A few surgeries has been cancelled due to not enough nurses and all of a sudden the doctors, who earn thousands of euros more than nurses (fyi: doctor on call on Saturday earns what one nurse earns in a month), are complaining that the nurses are selfish and that they should yield and do more work, so the surgeries can be done in time. Some call this form of industrial action a strike. Which it is not. Nurses are selfish and on strike because they work the shifts they were originally assigned. Nurses are selfish, because they work the hours they're supposed to work. Someone needs to take a good hard look in the mirror...

The underpaid nurse is always the one who should yield. There are plenty of research that shows that shift work is unhealthy, going from evening shift to morning shift barely leaves time for rest. Tasks are transferred to nurses more and more, social workers tasks for example, but that doesn't show in the salary. The nurses are constantly expected to do more tasks they're not trained for, with the same salary.

Media also likes to indulge readers with stories about how they are treated unfairly at the emergency room for example. There are always comments and stories about how "the nurses are just sitting and drinking coffee". Unfortunately we can rarely defend ourselves, because we're bound by secrecy for the privacy of our patients and clients. In some places the work is hectic and physically + emotionally draining. In other places the work is mostly emotionally draining. In all of the places nurses do valuable work, but it's not valued in the salary.

"A calling" doesn't provide a decent living (I hate when nursing is called a calling), it's just a job among others, even though not everyone is cut out for this. The salary needs to match the value and the amount of work.
